6407 - Students to Host Fishing Derby in Honor of Inauguration
6407|September 21, 2012
The Malone University student social justice organizations be:Justice, the Fishing Club, and the Social Work Club are joining forces to host a Fishing Derby on Saturday, October 13 from 2:30-5:30 p.m. at Varian Orchards, located at 6344 Orchard View Drive Southeast, East Canton.
The Fishing Derby is open to the public and will include fishing, delicious baked goods, and rides on the big green apple trolley. Experts from Malone's Fishing Club will be on hand to help children (and grown-ups!) catch fish. Prizes will be given for first fish caught, fattest fish, longest fish, etc. The lake is stocked with bass, blue gill, crappie, and sun fish. Registration is helpful (but not required) at www.malone.edu/fish!
A limited number of fishing poles will be available for rent; bait is available for purchase. There is no admission price, but there will be opportunities to make a donation.
All proceeds will go towards the purchase of a Food Machine (foodmachine.org) to benefit one of 13 children’s homes operated worldwide by Remember Nhu, a global organization dedicated to rescuing young women from human trafficking. With the use of a Food Machine, tilapia are raised in a tank containing water. The fish waste creates nutrient rich water used to fertilize the plants in the grow beds. The plants then act as a biofilter, cleaning the water, which flows back to the fish tank.

The project is one of many currently being carried out by the University in honor of President David King's upcoming inauguration, including specific acts of service to the church, community, and the world.
