6476-Malone University faculty, students participate in NaNoWriMo international novel-writing competition
6476-November 20, 2012
The countdown is on – just 10 days to go. For those who have always wanted to write the 'Great American Novel,' NaNoWriMo (short for National Novel Writing Month) is giving Malone University faculty, staff, and students the opportunity to compete against others the world over to do just that – all within 30 days!
Beginning this month, 15-20 Malone University staff, faculty, and students joined with hundreds of thousands of people around the world to embark on the challenge of writing a 50,000 word novel before midnight on November 30. Although the exception and not the rule, the event has produced books that have gone on to become published works.
At Malone University, the Creative Writing Program is supporting those of the community who are undertaking this endeavor, sponsoring two Write-Ins per week. Here, future novelists gather together in a room, laptops on laps, with plenty of Twizzlers, popcorn and coffee on hand, writing their hearts out. NaNoWriMo is first and foremost a social event where word count trumps quality throughout the rough draft process – with the emphasis on fun.
