6550- Malone University School of Nursing and Health Sciences welcomes visiting student nurse from Denmark

6550-March 8, 2013

Flor

The Malone University School of Nursing and Health Sciences recently welcomed a visiting student nurse from Denmark. Mike Flor is a senior nursing student who will graduate in May from University College Lillebaelt, Department of Nursing in Odense, Denmark. Flor participated in a variety of activities February 18 - 25 in the University's Regula Hall, home of Malone's School of Nursing and Health Sciences. He attended nursing classes as well as clinical experiences at the Lorain County Free Clinic, and at the Aultman Hospital Emergency Department with Malone alumni Lynn Martin and Katrina Kratzer.

The visit came about by relationships built through the University's cross-cultural experience, a requirement for all nursing majors. Jack Harris, Ph.D., director of global and off-campus programs, and Lora Wyss, Ph.D., associate professor of nursing, collaborated on ways in which a component of nursing focuses on spiritual care in a secular environment – and introduced that concept to Danish academics through the cross-cultural experience.

In addition, the dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, Debra Lee, Ph.D., along with Kathleen Flaherty, Ph.D., director of the master of science in nursing program, will travel to Denmark at the end of April with current junior nursing students as they experience the Denmark culture - including nursing and health care - while exploring cross cultural possibilities for graduate nursing education.

Malone University, a Christian university for the arts, sciences, and professions in the liberal arts tradition, affiliated with the Evangelical Friends Church, awards both undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 100 academic programs. Malone has been recognized by the prestigious Templeton Foundation as a leader in character development, as one of Northeast Ohio’s Top Workplaces by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and is ranked among the top colleges and universities in the Midwest under the category Regional Universities according to U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges 2014
