6553-Malone University uses Arts in Stark grant to share African culture with area middle school children
6553-March 11, 2013
Malone University faculty will share African culture with local middle school children, thanks to a grant from Arts in Stark. Moses Rumano, Ph.D., assistant professor of education and Nancy Varian, Ph.D., director, Center for Professional Development, along with Rosie Gregg, assistant to the director of the Center for Professional Development, will share with two area middle schools (Heritage Christian and Minerva Middle School) the culture and art of Africa, with an emphasis on the country of Zimbabwe, home country of Dr. Rumano. Both schools will follow up the visit by doing art projects based on the study and presentation.
Dr. Varian explained, "Dr. Rumano will be presenting. Afterwards – thanks to the grant -- the University will provide art teachers/schools with teaching materials and books to do projects with their students. The presentation will include actual artifacts (textiles, batiks, wood, weaving, recycling, masks, and musical instruments) which should give them a springboard to think of projects they can do, with this as a foundation."
