Malone University Opera Presents: You’ll Never Walk Alone: famous scenes from musicals and opera on Saturday April 6

The Malone University College of Theology, Arts, and Sciences – Department of Music will present You'll Never Walk Alone: famous scenes from musicals and opera, Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Stewart Room of the Randall Campus Center, located on the campus at 2600 Cleveland Avenue N.W. in Canton. The program – with Cynthia Wohlschlager, artistic director; and Patrick Wickliffe, collaborative pianist – is free and open to the public. A program follows.

Cynthia Wohlschlager, mezzo-soprano, is the vocal coordinator at Malone University as well as artistic director of the newly formed opera workshop. Performances have taken Cynthia to Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. This season saw her performing as a baroque soloist with Singers Companye in early February, singing the mezzo solos in Bach's St. Matthew Passion with Tuscarawas Symphony in March, and performing the role of the old prioress in Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites for CIM at the end of February. A native of northeast Ohio, she has performed operas in area schools through Opera Cleveland on Tour and The Akron Concert Society. She was a featured soloist at the Spoleto Music Festival in Italy and won an opportunity to sing in Graz, Austria under the esteemed conductor Edoardo Müller. Recitals venues include the French Society of Cleveland, the Tuesday Musical Club at the Akron Art Museum, Christmas at Malone, the CIM Women's Committee Recital Series, and the Jefferson Arts Council Concert Series. She has appeared with the Duke Symphony Orchestra in performances of Le Nozze di Figaro and Hansel and Gretel. She was a member of the core ensemble with Opera Cleveland and has been seen in numerous productions at the State Theatre in Playhouse Square. Cynthia is a recipient of the O.D. Taliferro Opera Scholarship and has won the Max Berman Award for Outstanding Vocal Performance, The Tuesday Musical Club Scholarship Competition, and The Dewey and Mary Gilley Memorial Award for Distinguished Opera Performance. Master class experiences include working with Mirella Freni, John Wustman, Elly Ameling, Warren Jones, and Martin Katz.   Cynthia is a member of the music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda and The National Association of Teachers of Singing. Past appointments include The Cleveland Institute of Music and Case Western Reserve University. Cynthia is on the voice faculties of Malone University, The University of Akron, and Sessione per la Musica et l'Arte in Siena, Italy.

Patrick Wickliffe is the accompanist for the Malone University Chorale and holds a master of music degree in performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studied with Antonio Pompa-Baldi. Mr. Wickliffe has received scholarships from all institutions with which he has been associated and has been accepted to reputed programs and festivals of music throughout the past thirteen years such as Manhattan School of Music, Eastman School of Music, Aspen Music Festival and School, and the Kent/Blossom Chamber Music Festival where he studied with Joela Jones and other instrumentalists of the Cleveland Orchestra. In 2005 Mr Wickliffe earned a bachelor of music degree from Oberlin Conservatory, where he studied with Robert Shannon and Peter Takács. Mr. Wickliffe has often collaborated in the promotion of new music as well. In 2000, John Ross, former conductor of ensembles at Interlochen Arts Academy, hailed him as "an exceptional talent...[with] true potential." That year he also inducted Mr. Wickliffe into Who's Who of American High School Students. Recent engagements include serving as assistant chorus master to C.M. Shearer and repetiteur to Dean Williamson at Opera Cleveland from 2008-2010 where he prepared operatic works from the Classic to late-Romantic eras, elevating the technical acumen of one of the region's top opera choruses. Mr. Wickliffe has taught privately at the Solon Center for the Arts from 2009-2011, and has performed various collaborative recitals at Baldwin-Wallace College and Cleveland State University from 2007-2010. He has also performed numerous collaborative and solo recitals at the Cleveland Institute of Music from 2006- 2007 featuring music from the Eighteenth to the Twenty-first centuries, as well as recitals at Oberlin Conservatory in 2004 and 2005 featuring a portion of Olivier Messiaen's Catalogue d'Oiseaux. Mr. Wickliffe currently serves as director of music and liturgy at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. His church career has spanned eight years and has included assistantships, key internships, and staff positions at area churches including St. Angela Merici Catholic Church, First United Methodist Church of Macedonia, and Plymouth Church, UCC, of Shaker Heights, where he studied music ministry and organ with Jim Riggs, current Dean of the Cleveland Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Mr. Wickliffe maintains active membership in the AGO as well as the National Pastoral Musician's Association (NPM), and has been a past member of the Music Teachers National Association, and the College Music Society.
