Malone University raises more than $2,000 for Refuge of Hope – SARTA matching gift will result in $4,000 worth of bus passes for Refuge of Hope clients

June 25, 2013 | Release # 6662

Refuge of Hope

Two recent fundraising efforts on the campus of Malone University are combining to ease the financial burden of travel for clients and residents of the Refuge of Hope in Canton.

Joyce Byler, director of The Malone University Wellness Center, oversees the annual Jack Hazen Open – Pump & Run, donating race proceeds toward a charitable organization. And this year, the discovery of a homeless individual on campus led to an impromptu act of generosity on the part of students, faculty, and staff

Earlier this spring, Dave Burnip, director of safety at Malone, followed up on a report that a man and his dog were living under a tree on the University campus. The discovery led to temporary housing, with the cooperation of Peace for Pets and Refuge of Hope.

In gratitude, Malone University is making a donation of used mattresses from residence halls to Refuge of Hope, and launched a fundraiser to work in cooperation with the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) to provide bus passes for Refuge of Hope residents and clients for travel to medical appointments, job interviews, counseling sessions, etc.

Combining race proceeds with the fundraiser, the University presented Refuge of Hope with a check for $2,045 earlier today.

SARTA will match all funds donated through the end of June up to $2,000, bringing the total donation to more than $4,000.

Peace for Pets is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping pets and the people who love them seek safety from domestic violence situations.
