Malone University students will “mix it up” on Monday

October 25, 2013 | Release # 6761

College of Theology, Arts, and Sciences.

The Malone University Department of Social Work is promoting something new on Monday, October 28 during the "dinner hour" between 5 – 6:30 p.m. Students are being asked to get outside their comfort zones and "mix it up. "

Mix It Up Day was created by Teaching Tolerance to get students to sit with someone new in the cafeteria, meet new people, and mix up their experiences with diversity. Students will be asked as they enter the cafeteria if they would like to sit at a table with someone new. Those who choose to participate will be handed a seating arrangement and conversation starters – but are encouraged to talk about anything.

From the Teaching Tolerance website:

Just what is Mix It Up Day?

A national campaign launched by Teaching Tolerance a decade ago, Mix It Up Day encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries. In our surveys, students have identified the cafeteria as the place where divisions are most clearly drawn. So on one day we ask students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new. It's a simple act with profound implications. Studies have shown that interactions across group lines can help reduce prejudice. When students interact with those who are different from them, biases and misconceptions can fall away.
