Malone University Applied Public Relations students launch health promotion campaign video with Aultcare

Malone University students in Ann Lawson's Applied Public Relations class launched a new health promotion video yesterday. The class had been working alongside officials from AultCare in producing the video that demonstrates how making healthy choices can be contagious – benefiting whole communities. The video is the cornerstone of an integrated social media campaign the class developed for AultCare, the Canton-based healthcare insurance provider.

The Applied PR class is an optional class for students who want to gain more hands-on experience prior to entering the workforce. Enrollment in the class has grown, says Ann Lawson, instructor of communication arts. This past fall semester, there were two groups of students who worked on projects. The other was done with Lenny's Collision of Barberton, for whom they completed a website redesign, and wrote and recorded a radio commercial.

For the AultCare campaign, the students conceived the idea, planned the script and shooting schedule, and enlisted the help of Malone media instructor Steve Pustay and media crew David Carmany, Scott Whitaker, and Sterling Haynes. They then presented the campaign to executives from AultCare.

The student team included:

  • Janelle Linder, a senior communication arts major from Canton, Ohio
  • Emily Geig, a senior communication arts major from Canal Fulton, Ohio
  • Madison Schuler, a junior communication arts major from Massillon, Ohio
  • Darius Givens, a senior communication arts major from Farmington Hills, Mich.

Malone University alumni participated as well. Three alumni - Ryan Crocker, Rebecca Frank Crocker and Whitney Prather – all appear in the video. Deanna McCune Albrecht, social media specialist for AultCare and contact for the project, is also a 2008 graduate from Malone University.

According to Lawson, "I had reached out to my alumni through a private Facebook group I run for them and students. Deanna Albrecht replied with a social media campaign for AultCare. Students thought a video would be a good anchor for the campaign. We presented our ideas to AultCare every step of the way."

Evidently Applied PR is truly being applied – AultCare's response was so positive they decided to launch the campaign this month.

The remainder of the campaign includes sharing the video on social media, and by community members using the hashtag #MyAultimateHealth on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to post photos of steps being taken to make healthy choices throughout the month of April.
