Malone University’s Jon Peterson will direct All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir July 23-August 3

June 13, 2014 | Release # 6902

Jon Peterson Jon C. Peterson, D.M.A., assistant professor of music at Malone University, will direct the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir at the Ohio State Fair July 23 – August 3.

As director, Dr. Peterson will have a variety of responsibilities throughout the year as well as during the 2014 Fair. He will recruit, prepare and manage a talented ensemble of more than 200 high school vocalists selected to represent Ohio's diverse population in the famed All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir. In addition, Dr. Peterson will select and manage a choir staff of 12-16 individuals, as well as volunteers. One of the director's first responsibilities will be selecting the 2014 class of Choir members.

Dr. Peterson earned a doctor of musical arts degree in choral conducting, with a minor in historical musicology from the University of Arizona. He currently also serves as director of choral activities at Malone University where he conducts the Malone University Chorale, Chamber Choir and Chapel Choir. At Malone he also teaches courses in music education, conducting and music ministry. Prior to coming to Malone last fall, Dr. Peterson served on the choral faculty at Bluffton University in Bluffton, Ohio and as artistic director of The Magpie Consort, a Columbus-based chamber choir.

"My experience working with individuals of all ages and levels of ability will allow me to relate to each student in his/her respective stage of learning. I will enjoy serving the students, the State Fair and the community, while actively recruiting future participants," states Dr. Peterson.

The All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir was founded in 1963. The group was organized to provide Ohio's high school vocalists an opportunity to share a musical experience similar to the All-Ohio State Fair Band. Approximately 200 members of the choir are selected each spring on the basis of their ability and experience, the recommendation of their high school choral director, geographical considerations and the consent and promised support of their parent or guardian. Participation in the organization is an educational and social experience which enables students to further develop their musical skills and become leaders in their school music programs and everyday life.

Members of the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir will arrive at the Ohio Expo Center on July 17, learning all of their music in a limited time. They remain housed on-site throughout the duration of the Fair and perform daily at various times and locations. The Choir will perform six to eight times each day during the 12-day Fair.
