Malone University students to host "Refugees Belong: A Walk in their Shoes"
March 17, 2017 | Release # 7311
The Malone University Social Work Department and be:justice students, along with several volunteers in the Stark County community, are hosting a 24 hour walk on Malone University’s campus entitled, “#RefugeesBelong – A Walk in their Shoes” to raise funds for World Relief Akron, a non-profit agency that helps resettle refugees.
The event takes place on March 24-25 from 6 p.m. to 6 p.m. Participants may check in Strand Building, Room 2 (near the walking track) and will conclude with an Welcoming Service in the Johnson Center Chapel. Several refugees will share their stories, and World Relief Akron Director Kara Ulmer will be the featured speaker. Interested participants may sign up here or on Facebook.
Participants will walk on Malone’s track, as well as have the option of choosing three paths if they would like to explore the journeys of those who speak Nepali, Arabic, or Kiswahili. Minimum donation for participation is $25. Donations can be made online at worldreliefakron.org or by check made payable to World Relief Akron (tax deductible). It is our hope that individuals will reach out to family and friends, as refugees must, to secure donations. All donations are tax-deductible.
Imagine : Your daily life has turned into that of a post-apocalyptic TV show. It is no longer safe to walk the streets in broad daylight. Your city has fallen. You have nowhere left to go. Finally, after weeks of hiding out in your own home, with no running water, no electricity, you make the decision—you must run. You take only the things you can carry on your back, and you pray that somewhere, somehow, you will find a better life for you, and what is left of your family.
While it is impossible to understand what a refugee has endured, we can imagine the fear it might take to drive us from our home and the humility it would require to muster up the courage to ask our family and friends for the money needed to make the journey. Few of us have ever walked, for days, through dangerous conditions, even fewer with all our possessions strapped to our backs. It is our hope that through participation is this event, we can become more mindful of all that the refugee community has been through. From that knowledge, perhaps, we will decide to stand with the vulnerable and welcome the stranger.
