To the Ends of the Earth

To the Ends of the Earth - Saint Johns Bible

To the Ends of the Earth

Acts 28 (1:8)

Artists: Donald Jackson with contributions from Sally Mae Joseph and Andrew Jamieson.

“To the Ends of the Earth” is a special treatment at the end of the Acts of the Apostles, accompanied by a carpet page with the verse, "You will be my witness in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8). This illumination completes the volume of The Saint John’s Bible containing the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles.

Donald Jackson, artist and calligrapher, has chosen the image of earth as seen from space as a contemporary interpretation of our place in the larger world. The cosmos, although understood differently today than in medieval times, continues to fill us with wonder and awe.

A vast illuminated manuscript, The Saint John’s Bible, has been commissioned by Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., from the contemporary scribe and illuminator, Donald Jackson. Jackson works in the Scriptorium in Wales, where he hand writes the Bible and creates illuminations in a unique collaboration with other artists and scribes.
