Egypt Service Learning Trip 2011
Dates: May 3-18, 2011
In-Country Hosts: Beautiful Oasis School and Farm
Cost: No more than $3,500
Trip Leaders: Ann Lawson, Instructor of Communication Arts
Scott Waalkes, Professor of International Politics
Details: The Malone team is returning to the same hosts and locations as our 2009 trip. Our accommodations in Cairo are in the home of an American missionary couple. The service project is with Beautiful Oasis School and farm, a Christian-run facility for children with developmental disabilities in the El-Fayoum desert. We will stay at the school for the 4 days of our work. The project will be a combination of physical work (painting, building, farming, etc) and playing with the children.
Sightseeing will include: the Giza Pyramids, Sphinx, Khan el-Khalili market, the Cave Church, the Cairo museum and possibly Valley of the Kings in Luxor and/or a Sinai Peninsula monastery.
Cultural experiences will include dining in the home of a typical city family as well as with a traditional family of rural farmers. We will also ride camels, a crowded city subway and a Nile sailboat as well as worship outside with members of an English-speaking church in Cairo.
