Guatemala Service Learning Trip 2012
Dates: Two weeks in May 2012Trip Leaders: Tony Schnyders (Tony spent 2 years teaching at a school in Guatemala) and Josh Perkins
Cost: Approximately $1,500
Details: We will be staying in Antigua for a couple of days where students will experience the deep rooted Roman Catholic traditions. Antigua boasts of grand cathedrals, breathtaking views of volcanoes, one of which we will be hiking, and a very interesting balance of modern amenities and ancient buildings. From Antigua we will be traveling to Panajachel where students will gain a better understanding of the textile industries and self-sustaining farmers who work tirelessly to keep their villages fed. We will go from Panajachel to Quetzaltenango (Xela) where we will be spending a good portion of our time serving the Inter-American School with some of their needs through, tutoring, leading worship, etc. In Xela the students will be staying in homes of students from the school. We will then take the bus from Xela to Guatemala City for a time to relax and soak up the history of Guatemala while touring museums and governing palaces. The trip will be a fun and fast paced adventure as we serve and learn about the Guatemalan culture.
