Position: Part-time Men's Volleyball Club Coach

About the position

Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Men's Volleyball Club Coach is responsible for recruiting, developing, fund-raising and managing a team of student athletes to successfully compete on the behalf of the University.  The role of the Club Coach at Malone University directly supports the foundational principles and educational goals of the University in a way that enhances the student experience. She/he is called to make Christ known within their team, through outreach in the church and community, and in service to others. 

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

  1. Direct all phases of the specified Malone University Club sports team.
  2. Maintain the agreed upon minimum Roster/Squad size and operational budget. If deficiencies occur, a one year probationary period will be implemented.  Further deficiencies may result in disciplinary action up to and including discharge. Day 10 each fall will serve as the reference point in measuring rostered athletes and total operational budgeting.
  3. Organize team meetings and communication.
  4. Develop coaching philosophy statement and ministry plan for the program.
  5. Coordinate and prepare all practice and competition schedules, including conference and non-conference competition.
  6. Supervise all recruiting activities.
  7. Fundraising in compliance with Malone Advancement guidelines to supplement extra expenditures. This may include summer camps, clinics, or other direct contact with community sources such as businesses, or alumni.
  8. Maintain positive communication and interaction with students, parents, faculty/staff, and athletic alumni.
  9. Prepare and submit for approval an annual operational budget and work within the parameters of the university to plan travel and support for team activities.
  10. Communicate with administration on major/capital needs.
  11. Organize and supervise daily office activities.
  12. Complete yearly self-evaluation.
  13. Responsible for facility maintenance, making sure applicable facilities are made ready for competition.
  14. Maintain and supervise facility maintenance on a yearly basis in collaboration with the physical plant.
  15. Specific goals for competition, fundraising, recruiting, and student athlete success, including academic and graduation rates, to be determined in collaboration with Director of Athletics.
  16. Strong commitment to diversity, high moral character, academic distinction, and acknowledged athletic proficiency.
  17. Provide competitive learning environment which facilitates the development of Christ-like character, self-discipline, and full potential.
  18. Coordinate educational growth for student athletes including leadership opportunities and training, conduct and safety, alcohol/drug educational programming, personal faith development, and nutrition education.
  19. Set individual and team strategic goals each year and develop an action plan to support these goals.
  20. Communicate the University and the Athletic department goals to assistant coaches and students.
  21. Identify and facilitate community service experiences for every student athlete on an annual basis.
  22. Promote and maintain positive public relations within the University, among alumni, and with the local community.
  23. Attend Athletic Department meetings, Community Worship, and represent Malone University at national and conference meetings when possible.
  24. Must comply at all times with Malone University Athletic Department or governing body rules for the sport.
  25. Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must exhibit a personal understanding of, and operate in concert with the mission statement and foundational principles of the University.  A bachelor’s degree is required, master’s degree preferred. Competing and/or significant coaching experience with the sport is required.

A proven ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing is essential. Proven effective relational skills are also required. A demonstrated ability to collaborate with a wide range of people and a demonstrated ability to efficiently and effectively solve problems and complete projects independently is essential. Computer literacy (Microsoft Office) is required, a readiness to navigate the campus or athletic database is essential.  

Proven time management skills, the ability to prioritize and record keeping abilities are essential. Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality of sensitive materials is essential. Current valid driver’s license and availability for frequent regional travel is required. Hours per week are anticipated to vary based on the needs and fluctuations in the school year. Evening, weekend and overnight commitments will be necessary at times.
