Social Work Events

Our social work department will be offering affordable CEU sessions for interested individuals throughout this semester.

The sessions can be taken for a small fee to earn CEU credit or for free to attend without credit.

All workshops are hosted in partnership with the Kingdom Leadership Alliance: a network of urban leaders in Northeast Ohio holistically trained to serve in the neighborhoods, marketplace, and margins of cities.

Spring 2022 Sessions

ACTIVE LISTENING + COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT
2-26-2022

An interactive workshop designed to develop active listening skills and the ability to listen/assess the assets and needs of a community.

Active listening is an essential skill of any good leader. Leaders who do not listen are likely to perpetuate harm. Leaders who listen are transformational. But listening isn't easy, it takes practice. In a year defined by social-distancing and political strife, many of us could use some practice in listening and leaning to love with our ears. Good community assessment starts with active listening. It requires leaders who are willing to take the time to hear the voices and stories within the communities they care about. It is not a technical tool as much as it is a personal one. This workshop will equip those of us who care about our communities with the practical skills required to listen and translate what was heard into collaborative, asset-based action that leads to flourishing communities.

Facilitated by Elizabeth Patterson Roe, professor of social work at Malone, and Pastor Duane Crabbs of The Front Porch Fellowship in the Summit Lake community of Akron, OH.

EMOTIONAL IQ + SELF-AWARENESS
3-26-2022

Learn how to listen and learn about yourself in a way that will foster love for others and love for self.

Let’s face it, for too long we've defined good leaders as those who are the most charismatic, most talented, most efficient, and so on. All the while, we've overlooked the qualities that foster transformation in organizations, communities, and people -- the essentials. Emotional intelligence and self-awareness lead to greater empathy and better leadership.  Join this interactive workshop and enhance your emotional IQ and self-awareness.

Facilitated by Elizabeth Patterson Roe, professor of social work at Malone, and Pastor Duane Crabbs of The Front Porch Fellowship in the Summit Lake community of Akron, OH.

TRAUMA INFORMED CARE + SELF CARE
4-9-2022

An interactive workshop on how to love our neighbor by seeing and caring for the whole person, including their trauma, wounds, and fear.

Trauma is endemic to the human experience. But, do we consider this when doing our work? Whether in the community, at your workplace, your church, the mission field, or at home, we must learn how to identify and address trauma. And not just for others, but in ourselves. This is why we marry trauma-informed care to self-care. Self-love is the key to transformational leadership.

Facilitated by Tova Kreps, a licensed clinical social worker and the co-founder and president of Wellspring Counseling, Inc. With over 30 years of experience and instruction, Tova is an expert on trauma.
