Questions about Welcome Week

WHAT/WHEN IS WELCOME WEEK?

Welcome Week is our mandatory, comprehensive new student orientation on August 21-25! It’s designed to help students transition to college, have fun, and become a successful student.  It includes meeting new friends, receiving your student ID cards and class schedule, safety advice, parking, information on student involvement, a tour of where your classes are, and you participate in your GEN 100 class starting Wednesday.

IS WELCOME WEEK REQUIRED?

Yes, Welcome Week is required of ALL new students - but we've designed Welcome Week to be both fun and informative, so we're confident you'll WANT to be a part of it.

WHAT IF I WORK OR HAVE ANOTHER OBLIGATION DURING THIS TIME?

Welcome week is required - and it’s something you won’t want to miss. If there is a conflict, reach out to your GEN 100 instructor listed on your class schedule.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I'M A "FIRST YEAR" OR A "TRANSFER" STUDENT?

First year students have not enrolled in any college or schooling since graduating from high school. If you've done post secondary classes - taking college classes while in high school - you are still considered a first year student.

Transfer students previously attended a different college OR have taken out any form of financial aid since graduating from high school.

If you're still in doubt, ask your Admissions Counselor!

WHAT IF I’M AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT?

Welcome Week begins at the same time for international students. If you need a ride from the airport and help navigating your first few days of arrival, please contact our International Student Adviser, Andrea Ramsey at aramsey@malone.edu or 1-330-471-8328. There is an international student resource guide that will answer a multitude of questions on MaloneXpress under “Student Resources”.

DO I HAVE TO ATTEND IF I AM A CCP STUDENT?

Only if you are registered for the GEN 100 class.

DO PARENTS NEED TO ATTEND WELCOME WEEK?

Malone University strongly encourages parents to attend the first day of Welcome Week. We believe it helps new students make a comfortable transition to college.

IS THERE A CHARGE FOR ATTENDING?

No - there's no charge! But if you do need lunch on Wednesday (check-in day), please order a boxed lunch for you and your family. The link is on the webpage on the welcome week schedule for new students. The link to order a lunch is on the schedule for Wednesday lunch until 5 days before check-in day in order for our cafeteria to prepare. There are also great local spots you can try - a list of some favorites will be available at the check-in table on Wednesday.

WHERE DO I GO WHEN I ARRIVE?

Check-in takes place in the Johnson Center, the entrance from Cleveland Avenue.  (Find it with our interactive Campus Map.) For transfers, it’s in Bennett Lounge in the Barn (Randall Campus Center).

After you check in, you’ll move into your residence hall.

WHY DO I NEED TO CHECK IN?

Students will receive their class assignments, mailbox information, and other important materials at this time.

I'M COMING TO CAMPUS EARLIER THAN WELCOME WEEK (FOR A SPORT, BAND, OR  OTHER ACTIVITY), SO DO I STILL NEED TO CHECK IN AT WELCOME WEEK?

Yes! Again, you'll be receiving important information, such as your class assignments. You'll also need to sign up for particular Welcome Week activities.

I WILL BE LIVING ON CAMPUS. WHEN CAN I MOVE IN?

After you have checked in at the Johnson Center on the first morning of Welcome Week (Wednesday), you will check in at the desk in the main lobby of your residence hall and then begin moving into your room. If you have questions about housing, please contact our housing coordinator at 330-471-8273.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

You may need to know your USERNAME and PASSWORD created to register for classes. Also, if you have your ID, bring that with you. Consider dressing in layers in case you find a room hot or cold - we never know what the weather will bring this time of year! Check that morning to see if you need an umbrella or raincoat. If you have not received your Student ID yet, come ready for that picture!

There’s also a list available of things to bring here.

WHERE DO I PARK?

Parking will be available in the Johnson Center as you arrive.

If you are a resident, spots for unloading will be close to the residence hall door where you are staying. Then, we kindly ask you to park away from the building on Wednesday, so others can park close to unload.

WILL OFFICES AT MALONE BE OPEN DURING WELCOME WEEK?

Of course! We are excited for your arrival. Our staff will be ready and waiting for you in Admissions, the Business Office, Center for Student Success, Financial Aid, the Bookstore, and the Mail Room.

MAY WE BUY TEXTBOOKS DURING WELCOME WEEK?

Sure! The University Campus Store will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, First-year students are automatically "opted in" to the Slingshot Choice program, so your books will be waiting for you in your room unless you choose to opt out
