Alan L. Houk has been a band director since 1978. A graduate of Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music, he studied conducting under the late Robert Fleming. He has directed bands at United High School, Hanoverton, Ohio, Ukarumpa High School in the country of Papua New Guinea, and Wellsville Jr. High, Wellsville, Ohio. He currently is the coordinator for student teaching placement for music education and assistant band director at Malone University. Alan holds the following academic degrees: Masters of Music Education and Bachelor of Music Education from Youngstown State University, Dana School of Music; and many hours of study in Educational Administration from Akron University. Alan holds current Ohio licensure in Education Administration K-12 and an Ohio permanent certificate in Music K-12. Additionally, he has participated in summer enrichment courses at Kent State University, Bowling Green State University, Walsh University Communicate Institute, and West Chester University. Alan has studied tuba with John Turk, Youngstown State University; Harvey Phillips, Indiana University; Richard Jacoby, Kent State University; and master lessons with Ron Bishop, Cleveland Orchestra and Harold MacDonald, Pittsburgh Symphony. Current membership in professional organizations include: Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development; National Association for Music Education, and Ohio Music Education Association.
