Denver Wittmer '24, Marketing, Digital Arts, and Professional Writing and Editing

Denver Wittmer ‘24, didn’t take a traditional path to college, but found the community of Malone welcoming.

“I graduated high school in 2019 and I didn’t have any intention of going to college, but rather I was planning to work in the trades. Some of my friends went to Malone, and I would come hang out with them on the weekends,” said Wittmer. “In the fall of 2020 I decided to go to college, and the network of people here made the transition easier.”

Through trying things out and learning more about himself, Wittmer has found a niche for himself within a triple major.

“I am majoring in marketing, digital arts, and professional writing and editing,” he said. “I’ve always liked movies and writing, and then I added on professional writing and editing after learning about it at the major fair. All throughout school I’ve always liked writing and I’ve always been good at it. I love movies and storytelling too, so I figured I might as well combine them.”

Being at Malone has allowed Wittmer to explore his passions to the fullest, most recently in The Open Frame Film Festival.

“The Open Frame Film Festival has been one of my absolute favorite experiences; working on the project, seeing it on the screen, and watching people’s reactions to it. It was very rewarding to see all of my hard work pay off there,” he said. “Last semester I won the Excellence in Writing award and the Audience Award. My film was a black and white ‘noir’ film, and I’ve written a 150 page western script that I began in the scriptwriting class. I do a lot of period piece work, I just like the way those scripts feel.”

In addition to following his passion as a storyteller, Wittmer has also recently begun a marketing internship with Innis Maggiore.

“Innis Maggiore is a firm that works with a lot of different clients, and through a connection to their COO, I’ve had a great internship experience. I’m there every day of the week for at least a few hours, and most of what I do is copywriting and other in-house projects. I’m doing any form of writing that they need,” said Wittmer.

Wittmer has also been able to create a workflow that sets him up for success.

“I try to cycle through projects consistently. If I’m working on the same project for a long time I can get burnt out, but as of now I’ve not hit any huge walls. This is my first experience with copywriting, so it’s a really valuable way to learn,” he said.

Even though the world of copywriting is new to Wittmer, his Malone foundation allowed him to jump in feet first.

“I was able to hit the ground running, and I’ve learned how to work with people through class projects. In my gap year I wasn’t really working with too many people. Working in classes with others has really built up my ability to collaborate and be part of a team,” he said.

Wittmer’s broad Malone experience has left him open to the possibilities of the future.

“I’m hoping to expand my internship into a full time job, but ultimately I’d welcome a career in screenwriting and directing.  Malone has fueled my passion for writing and I’m already working on my next Open Frame project!”
