At Malone University, your safety is our top priority. Our Campus Safety team works around the clock to ensure a secure environment where students, faculty, staff, and visitors can live, learn, and thrive. Through proactive patrolling, emergency response, and strong partnerships with local law enforcement, we foster a community of care rooted in our Christian values.
The Campus Safety Department holds the designation of a Campus Police Department under Ohio Revised Code, Section 1713.50. Our team conducts foot and vehicular patrols of the campus and residence halls 365 days a year. Safety officers aid in the enforcement of Malone University policies.
Safety Officers perform, but are not limited to, the following duties:
- Oversee emergency alert process (Campus Shield)
- Regular patrols by vehicle and on foot;
- Monitor activity within the premises: traffic operations, parking system, reporting irregularities and suspicious activity;
- Respond to students and employees in distress (courtesy escorts, assist with minor car problems, door access, etc.);
- Offer assistance by calling police, fire and medical emergencies for crisis intervention;
- Report incidents/crimes by ensuring proper investigation by appropriate authorities;
- Respond to immediate building issues after hours;
- Report maintenance concerns with facilities to the Physical Plant staff;
- Inspect buildings and equipment;
- Special Events assistance: provide safety presence at campus events, building door checks.
Campus Safety maintains a close working relationship with local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as well as the Canton Fire Department. Major crimes are reported and handled by the Canton Police Department. Lesser crimes are handled by Campus Safety and processed through the University’s student conduct process.

Campus Shield
The Campus Shield alert system is a safety app made available to Malone students and staff by download through Apple’s “App Store” and Google’s “Play” store for Android phones. The App is FREE. More information and a step-by-step guide on creating your account is provided during Orientation and at any time by request through Campus Safety. Even if you don’t own a smartphone, this system can send texts regarding emergency situations, weather-related closings, etc. Students are strongly encouraged to create an account.

What are emergency alerts?
Messages are issued by Campus Safety when it is determined the campus community needs to take immediate action to remain safe.
When are alerts sent?
Campus Shield Alerts, sent via text message, push notification, and email, are issued when it is determined that the campus community needs to take immediate action to remain safe. Such instances could include, but are not limited to, an active aggressor on campus or a severe weather event.
How do I know if an alert has been issued?
These messages may be sent using a variety of communications tools including text message, e-mail, the University website, and Malone social media. Any current student, faculty or staff member with a registered cell phone number through the Registrar or HR systems should receive alert messages. If you do not receive these alerts, please notify Campus Safety.
What do alerts say?
If an alert is issued, it may contain general information and instructions for next steps. Additional alerts may follow containing additional details like the incident location or the specific type of emergency. Further information will be provided at malone.edu/emergency.
Safety and access to facilities
Campus Safety works in cooperation with the Physical Plant staff to maintain a safe campus environment. The Director of Campus Safety makes recommendations for the maintenance of grounds to remove potentially dangerous areas; team members also report any needed repairs to the Physical Plant which include, but are not limited to, broken lights, locks, windows, doors and other safety concerns.
Physical Plant maintains records of all keys to individual rooms in residence halls. Residence halls are locked 24 hours a day, and individuals can enter by the use of an ID card. There are video surveillance cameras in all entrances of the residence halls which record students entering and leaving the building.
Alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs
Abuse of, and addiction to, alcohol and drugs is extremely harmful individual’s health and relationships, and intoxication breeds irresponsible behavior toward others.
Malone Prohibits:
- The possession, use, distribution, purchase or sale of illegal or unauthorized drugs or controlled substances, or being under the influence of any such substance. Drug-related paraphernalia is also prohibited.
- Using, or being under the influence of, alcohol while on Malone property, while conducting Malone business, while engaging in Malone related activities, or while operating or riding in any vehicle owned or supplied by Malone. Malone officials may conduct drug and/or alcohol testing of students without prior notice. For further details, refer to the Malone University “Substance Use and Abuse Policy for Employees and Students.”
- Malone discourages the use of tobacco or alcoholic beverages for all members of the Malone Community.
Firearms and / or other weapons
Firearms, ammunition, knives, martial arts weapons, hunting bows or arrows and/or any other weapons are not permitted in the residence halls or on Malone property, except as required by law. Permission may be granted from the resident director (RD) to store minimal hunting equipment. Violators are subject to fines, removal from housing, and/or other disciplinary action. Information concerning how to build weapons is not permitted on Malone property.
