If you want to dig deeper in studying a combination of academic disciplines with unique career goals in mind, then our individualized major may be the opportunity you’re looking for. We will help you create a proposal for approval no later than your junior year, so you can prepare to be a servant leader in ways that are as unique as you are.
Available for current students, you would collaborate with the registrar who will connect you to a faculty adviser who is prepared to help refine your focus for the best opportunity at success. Customizing your own plan of study is a bold and exciting step toward serving the world with your unique skills in mind.

Is an individualized major right for you?
It takes a creative mind to forge an uncommon path. At Malone, you won’t walk that path alone; we will help you discern the best steps to take so you’ll be prepared for life after graduation.
Once you’re enrolled and we get to know your dreams and aspirations, strengths and weaknesses, we’ll help you put together a proposal for an individualized major that reflects your skills and goals. We’ll ask you to consider a few factors, such as:
- How will your proposed major fulfill your educational goals?
- Are there any other majors at Malone that might fulfill the same purpose?
- How does your proposed major reflect Malone’s Christian mission?

Where can I get help and resources as a student pursuing an individualized major?
Your first few steps will include meeting with Malone’s registrar to learn the process. Then you’ll be connected with an adviser whose knowledge aligns with your interests.
How will my major lead to jobs?
Generally speaking, employers care little about what you majored in; rather they want to know what specific skills and experiences and character you bring to their workplace. Focus on what you do during college rather than declaring the perfect major. Even a degree in education, nursing, or social work is not a guaranteed ticket to a job. You have to do the work during college to prove to employers that you are ready. We require all students to complete internships or other hands-on learning experiences for this very reason.
Will I have to go on for more schooling after college? If yes, do I need a certain major?
Fields such as law, medicine, physical or occupational therapy, and counseling do require additional, graduate-level education. But none of these fields requires a “pre” (-law, -med, -PT, -OT, or -counseling) major. All but law school will require you to complete a list of prerequisite courses, and you can major in anything as long as you take those classes.
