Malone welcomes inaugural cohort of master of social work students

Academic Excellence

Building on the launch of its online Master of Social Work (MSW) program for Fall 2026, Malone University proudly welcomed its inaugural cohort of 14 graduate students at the start of this semester.

Representing a diverse cross-section of professional backgrounds, ages, and life experiences, the cohort has officially begun coursework in two distinct specializations: Clinical Mental Health and Intercultural: Local & Global.

The inaugural group features strong academic preparation, with eight students entering with Advanced Standing. The cohort brings together a dynamic mix of Malone undergraduate alumni and graduates from other colleges and universities across the region.

“We are thrilled to officially launch our online MSW program with such a talented and dedicated group of learners,” said Elizabeth Patterson Roe, LISW-S, Ph.D., professor of social work and program director for the new master’s program. “Our students bring a remarkable range of professional experience and perspectives into the classroom, and having more than half begin at Advanced Standing reflects the strong demand for advanced social work education. It sets a high bar for our program.”

The cohort includes seasoned professionals and career changers alike. Several students are already Licensed Social Workers (LSWs) seeking advanced skills toward independent licensure to serve as therapists, clinical directors, or organizational leaders. Others bring experience in broader social services and are pursuing licensure to transition into direct practice, therapy, or administrative roles.

This diversity of backgrounds creates a rich, collaborative learning environment where students draw upon their real-world expertise during virtual classroom discussions and assignments.

Beyond their professional credentials, the new MSW cohort reflects Malone’s commitment to faith-integrated education.

“Although students who come to Malone do not need to be Christian, through our discussions and course interactions it is immediately evident that our students share a clear Christian calling to serve others,” said Roe. “They have a deep desire to make a lasting impact in their communities as helping professionals who are dedicated to serving the Church, local communities, and the world. They are already making a difference, and we are excited to see how their impact expands as they develop advanced skills for working with individuals, families, groups, and communities.”

Designed specifically for working professionals, Malone’s online MSW combines flexible coursework with structured practicum experiences, allowing students to balance work and family life while advancing their careers.
