Frequently Asked Questions about Welcome Week
What and when is Welcome Week?
Welcome Week is our mandatory, comprehensive new student orientation from August 20-24! It’s designed to help students transition to college, have fun, and become successful students. It includes meeting new friends and receiving your student ID card, class schedule, safety advice, information on parking and student involvement, and a tour of where your classes are as well as participating in students’ GEN 100 class starting Wednesday (first-year students only).
Is Welcome Week required?
Yes, Welcome Week is required of all new students; however, we’ve designed Welcome Week to be both fun and informative, so we’re confident you’ll want to be a part of it.
What if I work or have another obligation during this time?
Welcome Week is required and is something students won’t want to miss. If there is a conflict, students should reach out to the GEN 100 instructor listed on their class schedule.
How do I know if I’m a “first-year” student or a “transfer” student?
First-year students have not enrolled in any college or schooling since graduating from high school. If a student has completed post secondary classes (taking college classes while in high school), he or she is still considered a first-year student.
Transfer students have previously attended a different college or have taken out any form of financial aid since graduating from high school.
Students can ask their admissions counselor if they have any questions.
What if I’m an international student?
Welcome Week begins at the same time for international students. If students need a ride from the airport or help navigating their first few days of arrival, they can contact our international student adviser, Andrea Ramsey at aramsey@malone.edu or at 1-330-471-8328.
There is also an international student resource guide, which will answer a multitude of questions. It is located on MaloneXpress under “Student Resources.”
Do I have to attend Welcome Week if I am a CCP student?
Students are only required to attend if they are registered for a GEN 100 class.
Do parents need to attend Welcome Week?
Malone University strongly encourages parents to attend the first day of Welcome Week. We believe it helps new students make a comfortable transition to college.
Is there a charge for attending Welcome Week?
No, there is no charge. However, students need to account for their lunch on Wednesday during move-in. Students’ first meal in the Dining Commons is dinner on Wednesday. We provide a great list of local spots you can try at check-in.
Where do I go when I arrive?
Check-in takes place in the Johnson Center, which is located next to the entrance from Cleveland Avenue. Check-in for transfer students on Friday takes place in Bennett Lounge, which is located in the Barn (Randall Campus Center).
After students check in, they will move into their residence halls.
Why do I need to check in?
Students will receive their class assignments, mailbox information, and other important materials at this time.
I’m coming to campus earlier than Welcome Week (for a sport or other activity), so do I still need to check in at Welcome Week?
Yes! Again, students will be receiving important information, such as their class assignments. Students will also need to sign up for particular Welcome Week activities.
I will be living on campus. When may I move in?
After students have checked in at the Johnson Center on the first morning of Welcome Week (Wednesday), they will check in at the desk in the main lobby of their residence halls and then begin moving into their rooms. Students can contact our housing coordinator at 330-471-8273 if they have any questions about housing.
What do I need to bring?
Students should bring their IDs, if possible. Students may also need to know their username and password to register for classes. Those who have not received their student IDs should come ready to have their pictures taken.
Students should also consider dressing in layers in case they find a room hot or cold as we never know what the weather will bring this time of year. We also recommend checking the weather to see if an umbrella or raincoat will be needed.
Where should I park?
Parking will be available in the Johnson Center as students arrive.
Spots for resident students to unload will be close to the residence hall doors where they are staying. Then, we kindly ask students to park away from the building on Wednesday, so others can park close to unload.
Will offices at Malone be open during Welcome Week?
Of course! We are excited for students’ arrival. Our staff will be ready and waiting for students in Admissions, the Business Office, the Center for Student Success, Financial Aid, the Bookstore, and the mailroom.
May I buy textbooks during Welcome Week?
Yes! The Campus Store will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. However, first-year students are automatically “opted in” to the Slingshot Choice program, so books will be waiting for students in their rooms unless they choose to opt out.
Whom do I contact if a family member needs disability accommodations for Welcome Week?
To make arrangements for wheelchair access, interpreters, etc., for events, students should call Anna Meadows at 330-471-8496 in the Center for Student Success.
What if I will be living on campus and I have a food allergy or special dietary need?

How do I pay my tuition bill?
