Dive deep into The College Experience
If you’re a first-year student enrolled in at least 12 credit hours, you’ll be taking GEN 100: The College Experience. You’ll meet with your GEN 100 College Experience class starting on move-in day (before the official start of classes) and the course meets one day a week throughout the fall semester. This program was developed to help ensure the success of first year students in college and it is the first step in your core curriculum path. You’ll explore a wide range of topics relevant to the college experience and “belonging and becoming” as a Malone student.
Required Reading
Our textbook, The College Experience, is a compilation of articles and readings from various sources, written especially for Malone University. You will receive the text on your first day of class in GEN 100.
Course Assistants
Each class section has an upperclassman course assistant (CA) who assists your faculty member instructor and walks with you as you adjust to college life. Your CA will be available in numerous ways socially, spiritually, and academically to help you throughout your first semester. You’ll meet him or her at the beginning of Welcome Week.
Topics covered in GEN 100 include:
- Big questions
- Integrity
- Faith stories
- Calling and career
- Community
- Relationships
- Practices and habits
What former students say:
“Meeting my class on move-in day really helped me to get to know people from the moment I arrived. It put me at ease because there was instantly a group of people I knew and recognized. My CA was so welcoming and really helped me connect with other students in the class, especially throughout the many fun, team-building activities during welcome week. It was so nice to know that there was someone who cared about me during a time of so many changes and uncertainties. My CA’s and professor’s enthusiasm was contagious and I couldn’t help but get excited for what was to come!”

“GEN 100 was an amazing opportunity for me to create lasting connections with my peers, my students, and my faculty members! The opportunity to teach foundational academic content for both college as well as life, and help first-year students acclimate to campus was very gratifying to me! I wanted to become a CA to be a resource and a mentor for first-year students and to develop my leadership skills. I think the course ideas and being a CA have influenced what I am doing now because I grew into my identity, developed life-giving relationships, and learned how to lead others in a supporting and encouraging way. “
