Expand your perspective with Malone’s Center for Intercultural Studies
Broaden your worldview and engage with global cultures through Malone’s Center for Intercultural Studies!
Not all classrooms have four walls! The Center for Intercultural Studies offers opportunities outside the traditional classroom that will enhance your education to prepare you for living out our mission to “serve the Church, community, and world”.
Wherever your interests lie, we can connect you with opportunities that will allow you to experience transformative cultural immersion and develop your ability to serve and thrive in a diverse world.

Service Learning
Apply your education as you see and serve the world. Whether you’re exploring global cultures, engaging in service to others, or deepening your academic studies in an international context, you’ll gain transformative experiences that shape your worldview and your future.
1-3 Week Service-Learning Trips
If you’re looking for meaningful, short-term service opportunities in the U.S or abroad, the Center for Intercultural Studies’ service-learning trips offer a dynamic way to see and serve the world. These experiences are led by Malone faculty, staff and alumni and are organized through partnerships with compassionate, knowledgeable international hosts who provide deep insight into the cultures and communities you’ll engage with.
Each trip is designed to help you learn from people within the local culture as you engage in mutually beneficial service and learning opportunities.. While destinations and leadership vary each year, every trip is crafted to meet real, local needs while helping you grow to understand real-world opportunities and challenges and ways to be a part of sustainable long-term solutions. Recent service-learning locations include: Florida Marine Biology trip, Guatemala Nursing-focused trip and general service and learning trips to Akron, Ohio, Italy, Kenya, and Romania.

Semester Study Away Programs
Whether you’re interested in spending a summer or semester abroad or want to better understand how to serve your neighbors through a more local experience, Malone works with partners who share our mission to provide a number of semester-away opportunities.
Concerned about costs and credits? As you plan ahead and work with the Center for Intercultural Studies to go to one of our approved programs, your credits can count towards completing your degree. Because of financial aid opportunities, many students discover that their semester away experience costs similar to a semester studying and living on campus at Malone.
Current students must apply to the program of their choice from the list below and be approved by Malone’s Center for Intercultural Studies through completing the Malone Study Away Clearance form that can be found on Malone Express.

Immerse yourself in a unique urban learning experience by partnering with neighborhood-based organizations in Akron or Canton through Malone University’s off-campus community engagement program. Live alongside fellow students in a commuter house while continuing your Malone coursework, and gain hands-on experience through volunteer work or internships that align with your academic goals. Over the course of an academic year, you’ll build meaningful relationships with local leaders, serve your neighbors, and reflect deeply on the intersection of service, community, and vocation. With a 10–20 hour weekly commitment—some of which may fulfill internship or course credit requirements—you’ll engage in transformational learning rooted in real-world impact.
The above programs are available for all students, but can also be combined with the Center for Intercultural Studies’ interdisciplinary co-majors and minor in Global and International Studies, Spanish (minor only), or Urban Studies. These areas of study are intended to complement our primary majors. Consider enhancing your degree with a complementary program that deepens your cross-cultural understanding to prepare you to more effectively serve the church, community and world.
With just a few additional courses—often integrated with your off-campus study—you can add a second major or a minor. These not only broaden your academic experience but also equip you with the skills and perspective to serve more effectively in diverse, global contexts.
For those interested in studying away, there are numerous scholarships awarded each year by a variety of organizations. Depending on factors such as where you are going, what you are studying, your personal history, etc., you may be eligible to apply for scholarships to help cover the costs of your study away program. Listed below are a few of the many scholarships offered by organizations that want to help send students around the world:
