Service Learning
Apply your education as you see and serve the world. Whether you’re exploring global cultures, engaging in service to others, or deepening your academic studies in an international context, you’ll gain transformative experiences that shape your worldview and your future.
Service-Learning Trips
If you’re looking for meaningful, short-term service opportunities abroad, the Center for Intercultural Studies’ service-learning trips offer a powerful way to see and serve the world. These experiences are built on partnerships with compassionate, knowledgeable international hosts who provide deep insight into the cultures and communities you’ll engage with.
Each trip is designed to help you learn about the culture and from the people who live it. While destinations and leadership vary each year, every project is crafted to meet real, local needs. Recent service-learning locations include Italy, Greece, Romania, China, Poland, Kenya, Denmark, Thailand, Costa Rica, and Ecuador.
City Serve
Immerse yourself in a unique urban learning experience by partnering with neighborhood-based organizations in Akron or Canton through Malone University’s off-campus community engagement program. Live alongside fellow students in a commuter house while continuing your Malone coursework, and gain hands-on experience through volunteer work or internships that align with your academic goals. Over the course of an academic year, you’ll build meaningful relationships with local leaders, serve your neighbors, and reflect deeply on the intersection of service, community, and vocation. With a 10–20 hour weekly commitment—some of which may fulfill internship or course credit requirements—you’ll engage in transformational learning rooted in real-world impact.
Explore Related Programs
Whether you’re planning to spend a semester away or want to better understand how to serve your neighbors, consider enhancing your degree with a complementary program that deepens your cross-cultural understanding.
With just a few additional courses—often integrated with your off-campus study—you can add a second major or a minor. These not only broaden your academic experience but also equip you with the skills and perspective to serve more effectively in diverse, global contexts.
