Academic Success Program: Supporting students for optimal learning
The Academic Success Program (ASP) meets you where you are, providing the support you need to thrive in and out of the classroom. Through GEN 101, peer mentoring, or accessibility services, our staff works with you weekly to refine skills, build confidence, and help you advocate for yourself.
Skills you will gain in GEN 101 include:
- Study techniques
- Note-taking
- Test-taking
- Effective communication
Since its launch in Fall 2020, ASP has helped students regain academic standing, with 100% of participants eligible to return for the following semester in its first two years. Once your GPA meets requirements, ASP enrollment ends—but the Center for Student Success remains your resource throughout your Malone journey!

Tutoring and Mentoring
Academic success involves spending time outside the classroom preparing for class. In fact, this is vital for achieving course and academic goals. Studies show that for every hour in the classroom, you should plan to spend approximately two to three hours outside the classroom studying, organizing notes, reading assignments, and completing group projects.
Academic Mentoring
Academic Mentors assist at-risk students in developing the skills necessary to be successful students and lifelong learners. It requires 5-7 hours/week with students with a set stipend per semester.
Professional Tutoring and Mentoring
Professional Tutoring and Mentoring Application
Professional Tutoring & Mentoring is a specialized fee-based service for students who need ongoing academic and social support. This program helps students in specific content areas and with other dimensions that impact academic achievement.
The program teaches participants skills of self-direction and independence to prepare them for academic and life challenges. Space is limited and students with disabilities are given priority. Fees are added to the student’s bill at the beginning of each semester and signed contracts are required.
- Tier I provides up to 20 hours of tutoring per semester
- Tier II provides 21-30 hours of tutoring per semester
- Tier III provides 31-40 hours of tutoring per semester
Individualized programs are uniquely designed based on the student’s assessment and learning style. Areas that may be addressed include: study skills, writing, grammar, math, reading, test-taking.
Students are also provided with support in academic planning and goal setting. Areas to learn and explore include: study strategies, classroom etiquette, communication skills, time management, health and wellness, community safety, and personal organization.
Academic Advising
At Malone, every student is paired with a faculty adviser in their major for personalized academic guidance. To further support students, the Academic Advising office, located in the Center for Student Success, offers additional resources to ease the transition to Malone from high school or another institution.
We help incoming students by creating their first-semester schedules, and continue to provide guidance throughout their academic journey. Services include exploring majors and career interests, aligning academic strengths with career goals, and presenting testing options for academic credit. With individualized support, academic advising empowers students to make informed decisions and achieve their academic goals.
New Students
New students visit the Center for Student Success to make schedule changes (add/drops) in the first semester of enrollment. Continuing students process course add/drops through the Office of the Registrar.
All Students
All students visit the Center for Student Success to request changes in academic majors and minors. The office will process those changes and assign students to the appropriate faculty academic advisers.
Students with Undeclared/Undecided Major
Students with undeclared/undecided majors meet each semester during Advising Week with the Center for Student Success. Your adviser will help create a schedule for the following semester and transition students to faculty academic advisers when they are ready to declare a major.
